The greek word ΎΛΗ means matter, and it is pronounced like hyle. ΎΛΗ[matter]HYLE (they/them) were initiated by artist Georgia Sagri with the vision of creating an open studio were issues of care and social empathy amongst her peers in the local and international art scenes, could emerge. In 2013 discussions regarding the space’s mission took place through the building of its two virtual platforms (main: hyle.gr and archive: hyle.mobi) and have continued since, after its physical manifestation in the spring of 2015.
ΎΛΗ[matter]HYLE is a semi-public / semi-private space in the center of Athens that aims to bring together art, politics and sciences as if their coexistence is a new undisciplined field of thought, action and living. ΎΛΗ[matter]HYLE, started as a feminist response to the binary constructions of public and private. It is an independent organism of people, animals, machines and ideas. Situated in an apartment in a central transit node at Omonia Square., it provides studio and communal living space, while it acts as an intimate relational source for the growing artistic community of local and international friends and peers. Its maintenance is collective and sustained by the artists, writers, researchers, poets, and organizers, who also contribute with their practices, in an expanded sense. Collaborators share time, reflect, work or even do nothing at ΎΛΗ[matter]HYLE, and through these processes they form the space’s public program and challenge their work.
ΎΛΗ[matter]HYLE became a non-for profit organization in the spring of 2020 with VAT number: 996797751.
ΎΛΗ[matter]HYLE is supported by the Greek Ministry of Culture and Outset. Contemporary Art Fund (Greece)

Modernisms are over, as they are just another process of understanding time, which coined the western culture and the 20th century. However to replace this model is truly difficult, since the time-line is present in the entire labor-life structure. 'ΥΛΗ[matter]HYLE cultivates matter by people with an urgency to manifest the attitudes and vocabularies of another society. As logos (speech, writing, presentation) it is the need to form a place of emotional solidarity, of diversity, connection, care, and to establish common methodologies of thinking, working and being in the world. It would be great to find biological time-coexistence models (philosophical maison de passe) just to show that the modern world of seeing before and after it is not given. An organism that brings together entities (people, animals, ideas, machines) who really feel the need to abandon self-restrictions and how they imagine themselves to be. It is not about what we are understanding as past or future but the effort to support and sustain an ongoing state of notions and matters. In greek the word 'ΥΛΗ sounds like hyle and in english it means matter. Hyle’s physical manifestation stands as a meeting point for artists, philosophers, scientists and the passer-by at Omonoia square in the center of Athens. Hyle’s websites hyle.gr and hyle.mobi gather and share knowledge, interactions, news and discussions in the form of a textual transmitter and receiver that it is distributed freely and ongoing.
